Come visit the western hemisphere's oldest city, Cusco, Peru. This ancient city combines myths and legends with grand historical
monuments. Cusco dates back 3000 years. One will see walls and foundations made of stone, many of which are the foundations
of the indigenous cultures which resided in Cusco before the Spaniards took over. The Spaniards added to the architecture
and culture of Cusco in the 1600 and 1700s. This is why one will see large, beautiful churches and other buildings that seem
to have a European feel, many of these buildings with the same stone foundation as before.
The streets are narrow and made of cobble stone. There are old fashioned street lamps adorning the small, winding roads.
Those who like shopping, will enjoy the numerous outdoor markets where one can buy souvenirs characteristic of the colorful
indigenous Cusconians. There are numerous cafes and restaurants from which to try authentic Peruvian dishes, and many old
and beautiful buildings to visit.
Cusco is a great jumping off point to other places of interest such as Machu Picchu, the Ollantaytambo compound, the Fortress
of Sacsayhuaman, and small towns like Pisac, Yucay, and Calca. An archaeologists dream and a historians delight, Cusco is
a great place to visit.
Cusco is an ideal city in which to study Spanish for those who enjoy low key and relaxing activities such as shopping,
sightseeing, and exposing oneself to an indigenous culture.
